The name Mafia is derived from the Arabic, meaning “group” or “archipelago”, or from the Swahili meaning “the land that heals”.

Mafia is little changed from ancient times and retains a traditional, friendly culture; and the community tourism association works hard to preserve this individuality. Chole Bay and its surrounding forests and islands are now within the protected Mafia Island Marine Park, supported with assistance from the World Wide Fund for Nature.

Mafia island is the largest of a small archipelago of islands and lies 25km off the coast of Tanzania in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Much of the island and surrounding archipelago is a designated Marine Park, and remains an untouched paradise of original coastal forests, surrounded by one of the world's richest marine habitats.

The Island lies off the mouth of the Rufiji River in Southern Tanzania. It is one of the least developed parts of an undeveloped country, yet it has been, and continues to be, part of important historical processes. Although its spectacular marine life is becoming increasingly well known, especially since the setting up of the Mafia Island Marine Park, little other information is widely available.

A total pure and untouched island of the world!!

Mafia has a rich history going back 2.000 years partly due to its location in the trading route, between Kilwa and Zanzibar, and there are many ancient ruins scattres between the archipelagos that give you the feeling you have stepped back in time!

Tanzania captures the very essence of the African continent, and distils it into one country, an African Eden of natural riches and cultural wealth. The land of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, Zanzibar, Ngorongoro Crater, the Maasai with 120 more tribes, is a very welcoming and approachable country of Africa…

The tickets for Mafia Dance Festival will be limited to 3000. We advise you to get your tickets as soon as the presale starts, as demand is very high and very few tickets will be available at the doors (if not sold out).

We want to protect the island's untouched nature and the quality of the festival. We believe that this is the best for all of us to enjoy and the best way for the organisation to facilitate everyone for this first edition.

Presale will start early October 2009.

Alguma trip para o festivel ???

2010 promete ser o ano dos festivais. Além da já conhecida sequência matadora de eventos do verão europeu, novos núcleos estão surgindo, assim como núcleos antigos estão organizando festas em locais pra lá de inusitados.

O Honu Eclipse, noticiado em primeira mão aqui no Balada Planet , foi uma grande surpresa, porém o preço do ingresso (US$500,00) assustou muitos brasileiros que estavam interessados.

Entrando com tudo no calendário de festivais, o Mafia Dance Festival promete ser um dos grandes destaques de 2010, marcado para acontecer entre os dias 1 e 15 de agosto, na Ilha de Mafia.

Com um nome sugestivo para uma reunião de amigos, a porção de terra está localizada na costa leste do continente africano, banhada pelo oceano Índico, repleta de coqueirais e águas azuis. Um cenário que imediatamente nos remete ao nordeste brasileiro.

A ilha de Mafia é território da Tanzânia, região historicamente conhecida como "o berço da Humanidade", um dos mais antigos assentamentos humanos do mundo. Lá foram encontrados fósseis do Australopitecus, um hominídeo primitivo do Homo Sapiens (homem moderno).

Em sua programação artística e cultural, o Mafia Dance Festival contará com quatro palcos independentes: Main Stage, Alternative Stage, African Stage e Awereness Stage.

No palco principal o carro chefe será o trance psicodélico de alto nível, sem muito espaço para o “psypop”. Podemos destacar os lives: Absolum, Pleiadians, KoxBox, Logic Bomb, Liquid Soul, Transwave, Protoculture e Tristan, que fará um live especial com 3 horas de duração.

O Brasil estará muito bem representado por um de seus principais expoentes do estilo, o DJ Swarup, organizador do Universo Paralello.

Fazendo jus ao nome (diferente do que acontece por aqui) a pista alternativa receberá artistas de downtempo, midtempo, ambient e world music, com projetos que flertam com o experimentalismo. Nada de techno, minimal ou qualquer estilo “uptempo” neste palco!

Voltado para a rica cultura local, o African Stage apresentará a verdadeira música africana e sonoridades da própria Tanzânia, num espaço que também abrigará a “feira mix” com pinturas, esculturas e as famosas máscaras. Tudo de maneira “unplugged”, pois tribalismo não depende de eletricidade.

Voltado para o conhecimento, o Awareness Stage servirá de palco para filmes e palestras sobre questões de importância global e espiritual, unindo forças através de oficinas de Yoga e Meditação.

Os ingressos do primeiro lote já estão disponíveis para compra online e custam 110 euros (+ taxas do PayPal). O Mafia Dance Festival será limitado a 3.000 pessoas, organizado pelos mesmos produtores do festival grego Samothraki, em parceria com a instituição SANA (Save Africa's Nature).

Para os amantes de festivais alternativos, que buscam além da diversão uma viagem de reflexão e autoconhecimento, o continente africano para ser um local apropriado para este resgate às origens.

Mais um festival trance cancelado...

O cancelamento de festas e festivais trance não são privilégio dos brasileiros. O último a entrar nessa lista foi o Mafia Dance Festival, marcado para acontecer em agosto na paradisíaca Ilha de Mafia, na Tanzania. Como já é de praxe em qualquer lugar do mundo, autoridades locais proibiram a realização do evento. Os organizadores dizem que o embargo ocorreu por pressão dos moradores locais, que são em sua grande maioria islâmicos.

Muitos deles, ao saber que por volta de 3000 freaks "invadiriam" a ilha, começaram a fazer propaganda negativa desse tipo de evento para a população e para as autoridades. Em contrapartida, muitos moradores da região dizem que um mês antes do festival, nada havia sido feito com relação a estrutura para receber os participantes da festa. Segundo eles, a ilha não tem estrutura para receber essa quantidade de pessoas de uma só vez, por ser uma região praticamente desabitada e o transporte até o local é precário. Essa discussão ainda vai longe...

Pra quem comprou ingresso e não quer morrer com ele na mão, a organização do Mafia Dance festival soltou uma lista de festivais que permitirão a troca do ingresso do Mafia.

FESTIVAL CANCELATION NOTICE

Dear Friends,

It is with great regret and disappointment that we wish to inform you of the cancellation of the Mafia Dance Festival. We hereby wish to present to you the reasons for which, despite all our continuous efforts, this event has been cancelled through no fault of our own and for reasons beyond our control.

During the initial stages of liaising with the responsible authorities of Tanzania with respect to organizing the Mafia Dance Festival, the concept and the realization of the event was received with great enthusiasm and was perceived as an excellent means to improve and develop the greater area, and financially strengthen the local community. The local company RUAZA LTD, which was responsible for the entire organization of the Festival, liaised with the local authorities as our collaborator/facilitator on site. The national and local authorities assured RUAZA LTD of straightforward proceedings, and furthermore guaranteed that all the required actions had been taken in order to obtain all requisite permits for the Festival. All necessary documents were signed and all essential actions had been taken to ensure the proper licensing of the Festival.

However, to our grave disappointment, certain ill-willed groups sought to undermine and accuse the invited artists, the organizing committee and even the attendees of the Festival, aiming at presenting to the authorities a false and completely misleading image of the Festival as a decadent and corrupted event.

We are well aware of the identity of the above mentioned groups and the motivation behind their actions therefore, we assure you that we will proceed to take all necessary legal measures against them, should they decide not to compensate us for this unjustified cancellation. Unfortunately, as a result of the ill-intended efforts of the aforementioned groups, extreme racism and xenophobia have been created, and the relevant authorities of Tanzania and particularly the National Art Council (Basata) decided to revoke our local license that had been issued for the Mafia Dance Festival. Following Basata’s decision, the Festival was therefore cancelled due to force majeure and despite all our continuous efforts to the contrary. Basata’s unreasonable and unjust decision, which we publicly denounce has no legal or justifiable basis whatsoever.

At this point, it is important to note that Basata’s unfair and inappropriate decision to cancel the Festival was communicated to us only a few days prior to the commencement of the Festival, a fact that confirms its objectionable behavior and establishes the total lack of respect towards the organizing committee, the artists but most importantly and foremost towards all of you, disrespecting each and everyone of you having made a personal and financial commitment to attend the Festival and visit Tanzania’s beautiful nature and civilization.

We stand before you obliged and with a strong feeling of responsibility towards you, as we can only be thankful for the loyalty you have demonstrated towards our company, the trust you have shown in our projects, and the support of our vision during all these years. Sticking to our principles in honoring our relationship, you can rest assured that we are working towards achieving a fast and satisfactory resolution of this unfortunate situation.

With respect to refunds of prepaid festival tickets a relevant statement will be announced very soon.

Prepaid festival tickets of the 3rd Period are refunded as we speak from the relevant Ambassadors (only face value of the ticket, booking fees will be retained from the Ambassadors).
Customers with prepaid tickets (all periods) from Access All Areas - London are refunded as we speak.

We are in talks with other festivals that we feel you will be interested in, as Mafia Dance festival goers, about the possibility of swapping your ticket for another festival at a discounted rate or for free. We will be in touch for this as soon as possible.

Customers who have liaised with the Pangea International Tours agent will receive refund as soon as possible, following an official announcement in the next few days and with communication with them (only face value of the services, booking fees will be retained as an admin fee by Pangea)

Customers renting Safari Tents on Mafia Island will be refunded at once.
Customers renting rooms at Butiama Lodge on Mafia Island can keep their booking and visit the lodge if they decide to (please contact Pangea International Tours to confirm your status).

The organizing committee is currently investigating the best way to refund the festival ticket holders. Based on the terms and conditions of the tickets, the Ambassadors are not liable and hold no responsibility with respect to refunds or any further transactions.
